Worldwide, an average 95.4 percent of LASIK patients are satisfied with their new vision, according to the first review of the world body of scientific literature, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) announced today. With 16.3 million patients having had LASIK worldwide, and more than a decade of clinical study and technological innovation behind it, LASIK is considered among the most successful elective procedures available today. "We find that there is solid evidence in the world's scientific literature to affirm that there is an exceptionally high level of satisfaction in patients who have had LASIK surgery. While no surgery is perfect, certainly the 19 peer-reviewed studies of 2,199 patients show extremely high satisfaction rates," said Richard L.
3i has eye on growth at Ultralase

Smith puts last season behind him, focuses on future
Alex Smith said his surgically repaired throwing shoulder is easing its way toward a full recovery. As for his standing with coach Mike Nolan, the 49ers quarterback said that fractured relationship has 100 percent healed. "I think we both understand each other,'' Smith said. "There are definitely things I look back at and wish I could do over again.'' The 49ers, perhaps welcoming a respite from stories about their tampering penalty, put Smith on a conference call with Bay Area reporters Thursday. The quarterback sounded rejuvenated in spirit — and nothing like the player whose sour 2007 included a separated shoulder and public feud with his head coach. The latter issue came to a boil in December, when Smith told The Mercury News that Nolan had tried to "spin" his teammates against him by indicating Smith's injury wasn't that severe.
Emilio Regaining Consciousness
Hospital officials say Tejano music star Emilio Navaira, who was severely injured after his tour bus crashed, is slowly regaining consciousness. Navaira opened his eyes and moved his arms and legs Wednesday evening, according to a statement from Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. He remains in critical condition at the hospital. The 45-year-old singer early Sunday morning was thrown through the windshield of his tour bus when it slammed into a collection of freeway barrels that mark the interchange of Interstate 610 and U.S. Highway 59 in Bellaire, a southwest Houston enclave. His injuries have required two brain surgeries, the most recent one Tuesday evening. Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. .
